VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering is at the core and heart of all that we do at SCVBC.  Volunteers assist individuals with their correspondence, with grocery and holiday shopping, and much more.  Volunteers join us at events and become a vital role in the lives of our clients. Prior experience working with the blind is not necessary.  See below to explore more details on how you can assist a blind or visually impaired child or adult.  If you are blind or visually impaired yourself, and you are interested in finding a volunteer to assist you, please call Sarah Conner at 408-295-4016 Ext 204 or write to volunteer@visionbeyondsight.org

  • In-Home Support: Volunteers are matched one-on-one with a client needing occasional assistance with activities such as reading mail, paying bills, and running errands. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, have a valid drivers license and access to an insured, reliable vehicle.

  • Activity Assistant: Help clients as needed at the Center. Act as sighted guides, assist with lunches, facilitate client games, assist with questionnaires, etc.

  • Drivers/Sighted Guides for Outings: Help with transportation and assist clients on field trips and community outings. A valid drivers license, insurance and access to a reliable vehicle are required.

  • Class Aides: Assist in the Sewing and Quilting Group, Ceramics Classes, Walking Groups, Yoga Class, Gardening, etc.

  • Multi-Lingual Volunteers: Assist with Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese and other non-English speaking clients and/or translate materials for staff as needed.

  • Computer Lab & Adaptive Equipment Aides: Assist clients with adaptive computer programs and low vision equipment.

  • Facility Improvement: Help maintain the landscaping, help keep the grounds and facility clean and in good repair.

  • Skills And Services Call List: One-time or occasional help. Handymen, computer technicians, truck drivers, plumbers, Web designers, electricians, tree trimmers etc. are needed.

  • Monday or Wednesday Night Bingo: SCVBC receives a large portion of its critical funding through its Bingo nights. Volunteering at Bingo is not only fun, but a great way to meet similar folks supporting our clients!  No experience needed.
