Activities Schedule
and General Information
 
SCVBC is a community-based organization dedicated to increasing the confidence, independence, and quality of life of the blind and visually impaired. SCVBC tackles complex vision loss issues comprehensively through rehabilitative, educational, and recreational services.

Our services, activities, and classes are available to all visually impaired adults living in Santa Clara County. One-on-one assistance is available on a limited basis.

Core rehabilitative services are provided at no cost to the client. Recreational/therapeutic activities are free or at a minimal cost.

SERVICES AND TRAINING CLASSES


ADAPTED LIVING SKILLS TRAINING
Classes (cooking, basic sewing, in-home by appt. only) are available.

ACCESSIBLE TECHNOLOGY TRAINING
Computer classes and low-technology solutions $30/Qtr.
-$10/drop in fee

COUNSELING
Individual and family counseling are available.

ORIENTATION & MOBILITY TRAINING
One-on-one training: proper cane use and guide techniques to increase mobility in the home and in the community.

BRAILLE INSTRUCTION
Individualized instruction on reading braille.

INFORMATION & REFERRAL
Resource information on helpful products and services

IN-HOME ASSISTANCE
Volunteers are available to help clients in their home, with reading and paperwork.

LONG-TERM ACCESS EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM
Check out CCTV’S as available, $20 per month. Call Lisa at 408.295.4016 x 200 for more info.

PEER SUPPORT GROUPS
Facilitated support groups for independence & daily living.

RESOURCES
Resource materials, product catalogs, on-site Store with inventory.
 
EDUCATION & RECREATION ACTIVITIES

Registration fees are due by the first class. Classes require sign-ups and occur quarterly. For more information, contact 408.295.4016 ext. 204.

MONDAY

GET FIT WALK 9 AM -10 AM
Meets at Oakridge Mall for a vigorous, group walk to improve cardiovascular & muscular endurance, & joint mobility. Leaders: Arnold & Gina. No Fee

CERAMICS I (HANDBUILDING) 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Participants create their own projects. Clean up is a participant responsibility. Instructor: Angel. Fee: $30/Qtr.

BEGINNER YOGA 11 AM - 12 PM
All ability levels welcome. Breathing, stretching, and relaxation exercises. Wear comfortable clothing.
Instructor/School: Yoga Bharati Fee: $5/Qtr.

COOKING WITHOUT LOOKING 12:30 PM – 2 PM
Learn basic cutting, measuring, mixing, stove top and oven use and have fun in the kitchen! Instructor: Haley Fee $35/session (5 weeks)


TUESDAY

MALL WALKING 9 AM - 10:30 AM
Group walks at Valley Fair Mall. Lead: Tom No Fee

BASIC SEWING SKILLS 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Learn basic sewing skills to create a small item of your own or join in to help with group sewing projects. Sewing machines and an iron are set up for your use.
Instructor: Carol Fee $5/Qtr.

WING CHUN KUNG FU 11:00 AM - 12 PM
Learn basic Kung Fu skill to help with strength, flexibility, balance and direction-focusing for self-defense. Instructor: Ken Fee $10/Qtr.



WEDNESDAY

WEEKLY CLIENT COMMUNITY MEETING 10 AM - 11 AM
An open meeting held each Wednesday in the auditorium. Join us to stay up-to-date on our programs and activities and enjoy weekly speakers. No Fee

EXERCISE CLASS 11 AM -11:30 AM

Meets after the Client Community Meeting. Slow stretching and low impact exercises adaptable to individual needs and abilities. Lead: Tom. No Fee

ADJUSTMENT TO VISION LOSS SUPPORT GROUP 11 AM - 12 PM

Trained rehabilitation counselors help clients adjust to their vision loss and discuss adaptive techniques for daily living. This course is done in 12-weeks, one session per week.

SIGNIFICANT OTHERS SUPPORT GROUP (by arrangement)
Facilitated by Vivian Younger, author of “A Guide to Independence for the Visually Impaired and Their Families.” No Fee

SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAM LUNCH 12 PM - 12:30 PM
A nutritious lunch is provided for clients over 60 years old and their spouses. Suggested donation is $3.00 per lunch. For those under 60, the fee is $6.00 for a lunch. Orders must be placed to ext. 204 by the preceding Monday.

ACCESSIBLE BINGO 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM

Braille and large print cards. Regular games and blackout.

LIVING WITH VISION LOSS 12:45 PM - 1:45 P.M.

Covers adaptive techniques for independence & daily living. No Fee

BOARD GAME GROUPS (Scrabble and other board games)


SMOKING CESSATION ASSISTANCE

A quarterly workshop and weekly support are available to help those wishing to learn more about how to quit smoking.

SOCIAL OUTINGS (Sign-up required)
*The second Thursday of the month we facilitate an outing to a social brunch/gathering to a different restaurant. Please join us! See our quarterly Calendar for each listing.

MONTHLY OUTINGS (Sign-up required)
*The fourth Thursday of the month we facilitate an outing to a fun and exciting location. Come and join us! See our quarterly Calendar for each listing. *Actual dates can vary due to scheduling/availability. Outings are on the last page.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION 12 PM - 12:30 PM
We celebrate birthdays on the last Wednesday of each quarter by providing birthday cake! Everyone is welcome to join the fun!
