Activities Schedule
and General Information
 
SCVBC is a community-based organization dedicated to increasing the confidence, independence, and quality of life of the blind and visually impaired. SCVBC tackles complex vision loss issues comprehensively through rehabilitative, educational, and recreational services.

Our services, activities, and classes are available to all visually impaired adults living in Santa Clara County. One-on-one assistance is available, but limited.

Rehabilitative support services are provided at no cost to the client. Recreational/therapeutic activities are free or minimal cost.

SERVICES AND TRAINING CLASSES


ADAPTED LIVING SKILLS TRAINING
Classes and one-on-one in-home training are available.

ACCESS TECHNOLOGY TRAINING
Computer classes and low-technology solutions $30 per Qtr.

COUNSELING
Individual and family counseling are available.

ORIENTATION & MOBILITY TRAINING
One-on-one training: proper cane use and guide techniques to increase mobility in the home and in the community.

BRAILLE INSTRUCTION
Individualized instruction on reading braille.

INFORMATION & REFERRAL
Resource information on helpful products and services

IN-HOME ASSISTANCE
Volunteers are available to help clients in their home, with reading and paperwork.

LONG-TERM ACCESS EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM
Check out CCTV’S as available, $20 per month.

Facilitated support groups for independence & daily living.

EDUCATION & RECREATION ACTIVITIES

Registration fees are due by the first class. Classes require sign-ups and occur quarterly. For more information, contact 408.295.4016 ext. 204.

MONDAY

GET FIT WALK 9 AM -10 AM
Meets at Oakridge Mall for a vigorous, group walk to improve cardiovascular & muscular endurance, & joint mobility. Leaders: Arnold & Gina Chew. No Cost.

CERAMICS I (HANDBUILDING) 9:15 AM - 12:00 PM
Participants create their own projects. Clean up is the responsibility of the participant. Instructor: Angel.
Cost: $30/Qtr.

BEGINNER YOGA 12 PM - 1 PM
All ability levels welcome. Breathing, stretching, and relaxation exercises. Wear comfortable clothing.
Instructor: Savitha. Cost: $5/Qtr.


TUESDAY

MALL WALKING 9 AM -10:30 AM
Group walks at Valley Fair Mall. Lead: Tom K. No Cost

SEWING, QUILTING, AND NEEDLEWORK 10 AM -12 PM
Join a group project, or get help with a project of your own. Sewing machines and an iron are set up for your use. Volunteer(s) can teach or assist you. Lead: Carol.
Cost $5/Qtr.

POTTERY WHEEL 9:30 AM-11:30 AM
Learn to 'throw' a pot. One-on-one instruction.
Instructor: Meredithe. Cost: $35/Qtr.

Learn to 'throw' a pot. One-on-one instruction.

WEDNESDAY

WEEKLY CLIENT COMMUNITY MEETING 10 AM - 11:00 AM
An open meeting held each Wednesday in the auditorium. Join us to stay up-to-date on our programs and activities. Outside speakers are scheduled at least once a month.

EXERCISE CLASS 11 AM -11:30 AM

Meets after the Client Community Meeting. Slow stretching and low impact exercises adaptable to individual needs and abilities. Lead: Tom K. No Cost

COMMUNICATION FOCUS GROUP 11 AM 12PM

Facilitator: Steve Mahan

ADJUSTMENT TO VISION LOSS SUPPORT GROUP 11 AM - 12 PM

Trained rehabilitation counselors help clients adjust to their vision loss and teach adaptive techniques for daily living. 12 week course, one session per week.

SIGNIFICANT OTHERS SUPPORT GROUP (by arrangement)
Facilitated by Vivian Younger, author of A Guide to Independence for the Visually Impaired and Their Families.

I-DO-IT CLASS 11:15 AM -11:45 AM

Have fun with technology, iDevices, Stream readers, etc. This support group helps the user of accessible technology. Lead(s): Patrick W. & John G. No Cost

SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAM LUNCH 12 PM - 12:30 PM
A nutritious lunch is provided for clients over 60 years old and their spouses. Suggested donation is $3.00 per lunch. For those under 60, the cost is $6.00 for a lunch. Orders must be placed to ext. 204 by the preceding Monday.

BINGO 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Braille and large print cards. Regular games and blackout.

LIVING WITH VISION LOSS 12:45 PM - 1:45 P.M.

Covers adaptive techniques for independence & daily living.

BOARD GAME GROUPS (Scrabble and other board games)


SMOKING CESSATION ASSISTANCE

A quarterly workshop and weekly support are available to help those wishing to learn more about how to quit smoking.


THURSDAY

RESTAURANT OUTINGS (Sign-up required)
*The second Thursday of the month we facilitate an outing to a social brunch/gathering to a different restaurant. Please join us! See our quarterly Calendar for each listing.

MONTHLY OUTINGS (Sign-up required)
The fourth Thursday of the month we facilitate an outing to a fun and exciting location. Come and join us! See our quarterly Calendar for each listing. *Actual dates can vary due to scheduling/availability. Outings are on last page.

BIRTHDAY CAKE 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM
We celebrate birthdays on the last Wednesday of each quarter by providing birthday cake! Everyone is welcome to join the fun!
