SCVBC is a community-based organization dedicated to increasing the confidence, independence, and quality of life of the blind and visually impaired. SCVBC tackles complex vision loss issues comprehensively through rehabilitative, educational, and recreational services.
Our services, activities, and classes are available to all visually impaired adults living in Santa Clara County. One-on-one assistance is available, but limited.
Most services, activities and classes are free. Subsidies may be available for those who need financial assistance.

SERVICES AND TRAINING CLASSES
ADAPTED LIVING SKILLS TRAINING (English & Spanish)
Classes and one-on-one in-home training are available.
ACCESS TECHNOLOGY TRAINING
Computer classes and low-technology solutions $15 per Qtr.
COUNSELING (English & Spanish)
Individual and family counseling are available.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION
Classes in Spanish- to- English offered on Mondays.
PEER SUPPORT GROUPS (English & Spanish)
ORIENTATION & MOBILITY TRAINING
One-on-one training: proper cane use and guide techniques to increase mobility in the home and in the community.
IN-HOME ASSISTANCE
Volunteers are available to help clients in their home, with reading and paperwork, or to assist with shopping.
BRAILLE INSTRUCTION
INFORMATION & REFERRAL
Resource information on helpful products and services
RESOURCE and LENDING LIBRARY
Resource materials, product catalogs, large print books, music and books on tape.
LONG-TERM ACCESS EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM
Check out CCTV’S as available, $20 per month. |

EDUCATION & RECREATION ACTIVITIES
Registration fees are due by the first class. Scholarships may be available. Classes require sign-ups and occur quarterly.

MONDAY
GET FIT WALK 9 AM -10 AM
Meets at Almaden Lake Park for a vigorous, group walk to improve cardiovascular & muscular endurance, & joint mobility. Leaders: Arnold & Gina Chew. Free
GARDENING 11 AM- 12 PM
Participants will enjoy the therapeutic benefits of maintaining a garden of vegetables, flowers, and herbs.
Cost: $10 per Quarter
CERAMICS II (HANDBUILDING) 9:30 AM-11:30 AM
Participants create their own projects. Clean up is the responsibility of the participant. Cost: $30 for the quarter. Instructor: Lee Morgan
TUESDAY
MALL WALKING 9 -10:30 AM
Group walks at Valley Fair Mall. Leader: Tom Keiser. Free
SEWING, QUILTING, AND NEEDLEWORK 10 AM -12 PM
Join a group project, or get help with a project of your own. Sewing machines and an iron are set up for your use. Volunteers can teach or assist you. Free, ongoing activity.
POTTERY WHEEL 9:30 AM-11:30 AM
Learn to 'throw' a pot. One-on-one instruction. Cost: $30/Qtr Instructor: Shirley Lantz
BEGINNER YOGA 12 - 1 PM
All ability levels welcome. Breathing, stretching, and relaxation exercises. Instructor: Marie May Carlson. Wear comfortable clothing. Cost: $5 for the quarter
WEDNESDAY
POTTERY WHEEL 9:00 AM-11:00 AM
Learn to 'throw' a pot. One-on-one instruction. Cost: $30/Qtr

WEEKLY CLIENT COMMUNITY MEETING 10 - 11:00 AM
An open meeting held each Wednesday in the auditorium. Join us to stay up-to-date on our programs and activities. Outside speakers are scheduled at least once a month.
EXERCISE CLASS 11:00 - 11:30 AM
Meets after the Client Community Meeting. Slow stretching and low impact exercises adaptable to individual needs and abilities. Leader: Tom Keiser. Free
POOL SHARING GROUP 11 AM - 12 PM
“Peer Outlook on Living” meets after the community meeting. POOL provides a forum to talk about experiences, needs, feelings, and questions related to vision loss.

ADJUSTMENT TO VISION LOSS SUPPORT GROUP
11 - 12:00
Trained rehabilitation counselors help clients adjust to their vision loss and teach adaptive techniques for daily living.
SIGNIFICANT OTHERS SUPPORT GROUP (by arrangement)
Facilitated by Vivian Younger, author of “A Guide to Independence for the Visually Impaired and Their Families.”
SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAM LUNCH 12 PM - 12:30 PM
A nutritious lunch is provided for clients over 60 years old and their spouses. Suggested donation is $2.50 per lunch. For those under 60, the cost is $5.00 for a lunch. Orders must be placed to ext. 204 by the preceding Monday.
BINGO 12:30 - 2 PM
Braille and large print cards. Regular games and blackout.
LIVING WITH VISION LOSS 12:45-2:00 P.M.
Adaptive techniques for daily living. 12-week course, one session per week.
BOARD GAME GROUPS (Scrabble and other board games)
SMOKING CESSATION ASSISTANCE
A quarterly workshop and weekly support are available to help those wishing to learn more about how to quit smoking.
THURSDAY
RESTAURANT OUTINGS (Sign-up required)
*The second Thursday of every month we gather at a different restaurant for a social luncheon. Please join us!!

*The third & fifth Thursday of every month we provide an outing to a fun and exciting location. Please come and join us! See the Calendar of Events for individual listings.
BIRTHDAY LUNCH 11 AM - 1 PM (Sign-up required)
We celebrate ‘Birthdays of the Month’ every other fourth Thursday. Lunch is free if it is your birthday month, otherwise the cost is $5. Everyone is welcome to join the fun!
